At a Glance

Umhlanga is a coastal town situated approximately 15km north of the city of Durban. Umhlanga derives its name from isiZulu and means "place of reeds", referring to the beds of reeds growing along the Ohlanga River north of Umhlanga Rocks. The town of Umhlanga has been expanding since the 1980s and is now the main commercial hub of the greater Durban area, with many national and multi-national corporates basing their operations in the recently developed Ridgeside and New Town Centre areas.

Umhlanga Ridgeside

Formerly sugarcane fields, Umhlanga Ridgeside is now the premier office location in Kwazulu-Natal and home to companies such as Investec, eNCA, Vodacom and Red Bull. The area’s hillside location offers some spectacular views of the Indian Ocean, as well as convenience due to its proximity to the M4, M41 and N2. The surrounding areas such as the Gateway Shopping District, La Lucia Ridge and Mount Edgecombe provide access to a wide range of amenities and business conveniences.

The Umhlanga Ridgeside area offers some high-grade office space in modern, environmentally sustainable office blocks. If you are looking for a commercial address amongst some of the top corporates, then this is the place to look.

New Town Centre

The New Town Centre is one of the more recent developments in the greater Umhlanga area. Situated to the north of the Gateway Shopping Centre, this area seeks to bring residential, commercial, retail, medical, educational and leisure elements together to create a holistic, mixed-use environment that offers a multitude of shopping, entertainment and accommodation options. The beautiful gardens of Chris Saunders Park provide an excellent getaway from the office, and also host the Wonder Market on the last Sunday of every month.

The New Town Centre is home to a range of business such as the Porsche and Honda dealerships, SARS, Old Town Italy restaurant, Trudon and Growthpoint.

La Lucia Ridge

The La Lucia Ridge area is home to some of the lower density office parks in the greater Umhlanga area. Many of the office parks in this area are set in well-maintained, sculptured indigenous gardens, providing a tranquil working environment just minutes from Gateway and Umhlanga Ridgeside. These offices parks also provide easy accessibility to the main arterial routes such as the M4, M41 and N2 and amenities. The area is home to businesses such as Aspen, Tugela Steel and Unilever.

Cornubia

Cornubia is the most recent development in the greater Umhlanga area. It’s a mixed income development that will see over 24 000 new homes bring built. The bulk of the development will be made up of commercial and industrial buildings, including a new 85 000m² shopping centre.

Cornubia is positioned between Durban's wealthier Mt Edgecombe and Umhlanga areas and lower-income areas north of the city such as Inanda, Ntuzuma, KwaMashu, Phoenix, Ottawa and Waterloo. This, combined with its proximity to the King Shaka Airport, will make it a prime business hub.

Mount Edgecombe

The Mount Edgecombe area is just to the east of the Gateway Shopping Centre. It is largely a residential area comprising the Mount Edgecombe Country Estate, but is also a growing business node offering affordable office rentals. There is also a range of warehousing and manufacturing facilities available in the area. Mount Edgecombe offers many of the conveniences of being based around Umhlanga, whilst offering good value for money to prospective businesses.
